EMIL MICHAEL KLEIN

April 06 - May 14, 2016

Galleria Federico Vavassori is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Emil Michael Klein. This is Klein’s second exhibition with the gallery, and the inaugural exhibition at the new location in Via Giorgio Giulini 5, Milan.

On view are four paintings, oil on canvas, all realized by Klein in 2016. Black lines carve through a white toned surface; actually they are all that remains of the original dark ground. In some cases they get traced over, while others get covered in white. These works follow Klein’s recent approach towards painting, in which the artist engages with a group of works at the same time, letting them go through different states and forms. Sometimes older paintings are set as a starting point for new compositions, in which the structure and style are adapted and changed, resulting in a repetitive gesture that leads to a new fabrication process. The exhibition is accompanied by a new fully illustrated artist book that includes 25 reproductions of Klein’s latest paintings. The book is designed by Teo Schifferli and published by BECKBOOKS.

Born in 1982, Emil Michael Klein lives and works in Zurich. Recently his work was subject of solo exhibitions at Galerie Francesca Pia, Zurich, and Gaudel de Stampa, Paris, as well as the group exhibitions Undisturbed Solitude at Kunsthaus Hamburg (curated by Chus Martínez), and Europe, Europe at Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo (curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Thomas Boutoux and Gunnar B. Kvaran).
